From our standard L3 with a build volume of just over 114 cm x 58 cm x 58 cm to a custom printer for the US Army that has a build volume of more than 6 m x 9 m x 3.6 m. The MELD technology was chosen to be part of the US Army’s Jointless Hull Program to produce the World’s Largest Metal Printer which will be operational in the beginning of 2023. Scale. MELD prints aluminum, titanium, steel, alloys, and more. Because MELD is an open-air process, no powder beds or special vacuums are needed. This means that with MELD there is no limit to the size part that can be printed. The process will scale with the size of the machine. High material throughput is one of the greatest advantages of MELD. By utilizing the MELD technology material can be deposited at a rate unmatched by other additive processes. No further processing such as HIP or sintering are required, parts are ready to be machined to their final geometries. MELD machines produce near-net shape components in a wide range of materials. A MELD machine allows manufacture of fully-built parts, coating existing structures, performing repairs, and joining similar and dissimilar materials using a wide array of metals and metal alloys, even un-weldable alloys. MELD offers very high-quality depositions at 100% density with equiaxed grain structures, refined grain size, and excellent as-deposited properties. The residual stress formed in the deposited components is much less than stresses developed during casting or other processes that involve melting and solidification. MELD yields a metallurgical bond between the deposited material and substrate or previously deposited layers.
