JOANNEUM RESEARCH develops materials, processes and coatings using lasers (100W to 8kW) and plasma-assisted surface treatment and coating technologies, for a wide spectre of industrial applications such as metalworking, power generation, aircraft, automotive, medical, etc. We combine a profound material science knowledge with substantial knowledge in the development of manufacturing/coating processes and areas of application. An illustrative example is the 3D printing and the subsequent coating of the surfaces, which is rapidly gaining attention in the field of medical technology (haemocompatible, antibacterial and osteoinductive coatings for a new generation of heart valves, antibacterial coating for spinal implants and barrier layers for implantable electronic actuators and sensors). Another example is the combination of different Additive Manufacturing processes to make i.e. large component with fine details in the aircraft sector.
